"We find it unacceptable that hundreds of new HIV infections occur year after year in the Netherlands that could have been prevented."
The Fast-Track Cities partners extend their sincere condolences to the family of Mayor Eberhard van der Laan, and the citizens of Amsterdam, on the occasion of his passing. We honor his work towards ensuring an inclusive, AIDS-free future for Amsterdam. (October 7, 2017)
Community Leadership Messages
In the past 30 years we have come a long way in reducing the number of new infections. By working in close cooperation with all relevant stakeholders and key populations throughout the city and adopting the most up-to- date methods, we have developed a unique and innovative approach providing unprecedented opportunities to strive for an HIV-free Amsterdam
"Tailoring the right prevention scheme to the right individual is the key to beat HIV. There have never been so many HIV prevention options than today. Amsterdam has pledged to create the best match between any particular strategy, whether biomedical or behavioral, and the needs and capabilities of the individual, no matter to which key population he or she belongs to."
"Every new HIV infection is one too many. We need to do everything we can to stop new infections from happening."
"A world without aids, together making a dream become reality!"
The exciting challenge of our comprehensive and coherent approach is not only the prevention of further transmission of HIV, but also to contribute to better health for both people with HIV, as well as for those who may be exposed to HIV.
"Rapid recognition and treatment of HIV in a person with acute infection is crucial for a good prognosis and to reduce transmission. This requires specific diagnostic and treatment facilities."
"Maximal collaboration with all parties is necessary to prevent new hiv-infections in the Netherlands.
"Prevention of HIV in The Netherlands is effective and yet we have approximately a 1.000 new HIV diagnoses each year. Around 700 of the new cases concern gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. These numbers have to go down. PrEP offers an effective, additional prevention strategy. COC Nederland and other organisations urge the minister of health to make PrEP available as soon as possible to all who want to access this prevention strategy to protect their health."
